Carlo Sampietro(1795–1850)
1795-01-23∗01/23/1795 in Milan, Italy
maleComposer
Son of Innocente and Agata Marzorati. Carlo Sampietro was born in Milan on 23 January 1795. A member of a philharmonic society and a respected music teacher, he is mentioned in numerous histories of music.
Carlo Sampietro's grandfather, Innocente, was the first member of the family to hold the distinguished titles of Kapellmeister and organist. He served at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Church of Santa Maria Coronata, the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, and the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in the Royal Ducal Castle. It was he who taught all of his children and grandchildren to play a musical instrument.
For months, efforts were made to establish the composer's date of birth, including inquiries to cultural institutions, but these met with little response, as so often happens with distinguished Italian musicians who have fallen into undeserved obscurity. Yet Sampietro composed works of considerable importance, including a Duet for Harp, Piano and Viola (1827). Two of his compositions are preserved in the Library of the Society of the Friends of Music in Vienna, while in his native Milan he remains virtually unknown.
Note: Carlo Sampietro had a brother, Antonio, who was also a music teacher; he was born in Milan in 1800 and died on March 10, 1881, and was married to Luigia Romano. Source: Trivulziana Historical Library, Rocchetta Courtyard, Sforza Castle, Milan
